Video Chat Software Facts

Most of the customers that come to our door only know one thing..."we want video software".   These people have been the unwitting prey of the amateur programmers who know a few buzzwords, drop a few names, make a few false claims and then laugh all the way to the bank with your money. Technology can be confusing, and sometimes even the guy who only knows 1% more than you can seem like a genius. So here are some common sense rules that will keep you safe before you open your checkbook.

1.  Do not buy into broadband hype.  There are still over 100 million dial-up users out there. Most still do not have the option to get broadband yet, and by most industry estimates that the situation will still exist until 2010. Ignoring dial-up users can be a huge mistake. The dial-up market is nearly void of competition when compared to the sites that have invested in broadband only solutions. Consider adding a dial-up option to your offerings. Ultravid offers solutions for both broadband and dial-up, ask about our discount to add this valuable option to your site.

2.  Video Servers MUST be written in C# or at least C++.  The programming language used plays a big part in how fast ANY software runs.  This is especially true for Video Chat Server Software. In the programming world the lower level the language the faster it runs. The lowest possible language is machine language, and as you've probably heard before it amounts to nothing more than a long series of 1's and 0's. That's a low as it gets, but there isn't a programmer out there that has that kind pf patience to in order to type billions and billions of 1's and 0's, so we must get into higher level languages. Higher level languages have the advantage of being less time consuming than 1's and 0's but also run a bit slower because programs must run through an interpreter to be understood by the machine.

The lowest language commonly used by microsoft developers is called C# (pronounced cee sharp), It's a relatively low level language and very fast running. An example of a higher level language is Visual Basic. Although visual basic makes it easy for non college level programmers to write software, it runs slower because the interpreter has to do more work to convert it into machine language. The highest level language, and slower still is currently Macromedia. Programs written in Macromedia, must first run through the Macromedia engine to be converted ironically by a program written in C# to an output that mimics C# and then be interpreted into machine language.

The extra steps that your computer must go through to run these higher level languages my be measured in nano seconds, but when you're streaming video, those nano seconds start to add up.

3.  Education matters.  There is no such thing as a "street smart" programmer when it comes to Video Chat Software.  Demand to know the education level of the programmers writing your product.  There are a lot of high school dropouts pawning themselves off as Ph.D's who did nothing more than pay $300 at a non-accredited diploma mill. But, the main reason for this is to avoid amateurs who simply buy generic programming libraries and slap them into a Visual Basic or Macromedia front end.  Although these products work, they are slow and unpredictable.

4.  Don't be fooled by fancy looking websites.  Any kid with a twenty dollar bill can get a professional looking website built, complete with flash animation and everything.

5.  Don't believe everything you read.  You've probably heard that all your life, but believe it or not, people are still fooled by fancy sounding buzzwords, abbreviations, and fake testimonials. Claims of people making millions, manufactured customer sales reports, and conveniently "name-withheld" testimonials should always be ignored.

6.  Demand to speak with a satisfied customer.  If they can't produce at least 1 that's pretty telling in itself.  Also demand to see at least a few websites making money with their software, and have a look at the ownership of the websites at nsiregistry.com to make sure that they all aren't the same owner.

7.  Never, ever, buy generic Video Chat Software.  Anyone who tells you that their video product is a one-size fits all is taking advantage of you.  If you are in the Adult Business... only buy software specific to your exact business model.  Same goes if you are in the long-distance learning business, or remote monitoring business... only buy software that was designed for that business.

8.  Don't be wowed by worthless bells, whistles and pretty colors.  Remember, some of the most "industrial strength" applications aren't designed to be pretty, just powerful.

9.  Avoid buying software from the "one man band".  There is no way you're going to get service after the sale, if the guy you are depending on for support has to scrounge up new sales to pay the bills.
